NEW YORK -- Former Tigers second-round pick Ron Bourquin was suspended for 50 games on Thursday after testing positive for a banned substance.

The Office of the Commissioner of Baseball announced today that Bourquin has received a 50-game suspension, effective at the start of next season, after testing positive for an amphetamine, a performance-enhancing substance, in violation of the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.

Bourquin, the Tigers' second-round selection of the 2006 Draft, split the '09 season between Class A West Michigan in the Midwest League and Double-A Erie in the Eastern League. He was named Midwest League Player of the Week on May 18 and earned All-Star recognition in June from the league.

The Ohio State product hit a combined .267 with eight homers and 77 RBIs between the two levels.

Bourquin, 24, was a two-time New York-Penn League All-Star with Class A short-season Oneonta in 2006 and '07. He spent the 2009 campaign with West Michigan, batting .235 in 118 games.

He is the 74th player to be suspended under the the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program since Opening Day 2009.
