Tim Teufel, a member of New York's 1986 World Series championship team, was promoted and will manage the Binghamton Mets of the Double-A Eastern League in 2010.
Earlier Tuesday, Wally Backman, who platooned with Teufel at second base in 1986, was named manager of the Brooklyn Cyclones of the short-season New York-Penn League.
Teufel, 51, spent four of the last five seasons managing the Class A Advanced St. Lucie Mets. He also had stints with the Class A Savannah Sand Gnats in 2007 and the Cyclones in 2003 and owns a Minor League managerial record of 337-404.
"We're thrilled to have a manager of Tim Teufel's caliber lead our ballclub," B-Mets general manager Scott Brown said. "He's familiar with the northeast and, even more importantly, many of the players that we expect to have in Binghamton during the course of the 2010 season."
In becoming the 12th manager in team history, Teufel replaces Mako Oliveras, who was 115-167 in two seasons in Binghamton.
Teufel spent 11 seasons in the Major Leagues with the Twins, Mets and Athletics after earning International League MVP honors with Toledo in 1983. He retired following the 1993 campaign, returning to baseball in 1998 as a scout with the Mets. He was a roving infield instructor in 2001 and 2002 before managing Brooklyn in 2003.
