NEW YORK -- Cincinnati Reds pitching prospect Jose Marmolejo was suspended 50 games Friday for violating the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.

The suspension was announced by the Office of the Commissioner of Baseball, which said Marmolejo was sanctioned for the "use and possession of a prohibited performance-enhancing substance."

Marmolejo, a 20-year-old right-hander, posted a 7.78 ERA in 13 relief appearances in the Rookie-level Dominican Summer League. He served a 10-game team-imposed suspension at the end of the regular season and will serve the remaining 40 games at the start of the 2010 campaign.

This story was not subject to the approval of the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues or its clubs.
