Mehring Monday 8/24: True Story

As a bit of background, the Beloit Snappers were
just in town. One of the trainers is also named Chris. On the day that Beloit
played their last game in town, there was a menu to a Cousin's sub shop taped to
the wall with a note that said something like, "Get your order and $$$ to
Chris before the game. Food will be delivered after the game."
This sign stayed up on the off day and through
the first three days of the Cedar Rapids series.
On Sunday, I went into the visiting team
clubhouse before the game to get their lineup. That's when one of the Kernels
players stopped me and asked, "Are you Chris?"
At this point, I am trying to think back to which
Kernel I made fun of the night before or if there are any guys on the team from
colleges I made fun of in the series. Then, I started to think about any close
scoring plays that might have gone against Cedar Rapids.
Then, he pointed at the sign, which had the
ordering instructions for a getaway meal. I said, "Yes, but I'm not that
Chris. That's left up from the Beloit series"
It was an odd coincidence and I don't think that
he believed me. Then, the player asked the Kernels traveling clubhouse manager
if he would order subs for the team for a post-game meal.
"I spend enough money," was the reply.
"You wouldn't buy them. We'll pay you. Just
order them," pleaded the player.
"No," was the one word reply.
I quickly double-checked my lineup and made a
quick exit before I could be dragged in more than I already was.
I left the clubhouse and went down the hallway to
get back to the relative safety of my broadcast booth. That's when I heard the
player say, "Thanks for the help, Chris."
I sure hope that was directed at the trainer from
Beloit.
