Burlington, IA (August 29, 2007) - With the bases loaded and no outs in the bottom of the tenth inning, Jesus Soto lined an 0-2 pitch to deep right-center to drive in Michael Thompson with the game-winning run as the Burlington Bees (30-34, 60-73) wrapped up their home schedule with a 1-0 win over the Swing of the Quad Cities (40-24, 78-55) at Community Field tonight.
Everett Teaford, Josh Cribb, and Aaron Hartsock combined on the four-hit shutout for the Bees. It is the Bees' twelfth shutout of the season, tying Peoria for the most in the Midwest League this year. Teaford worked six innings and allowed three hits, one walk, and struck out four. The outing finishes a stellar month for the lefty. In six appearances (three starts) he allows just two earned runs in 26.1 innings for an August ERA of 0.68. Cribb worked two innings, allowed one hit and struck out two. Hartsock (7-4) hit one batter and struck out one over the final two innings and got the win when Soto delivered the deciding blow.
Swing starter Elvis Hernandez allowed just one hit over 3.1 innings, but left early with an injury. Chuckie Fick took over in the middle of an at-bat to Luis Castillo and went on to work 3.2 scoreless innings with four strikeouts. The Bees threatened in both the eighth and ninth innings against Kyle Sadlowski. Jase Turner led off the eighth with a double, but the Bees never advanced pinch-runner Vinny Pennell off of second. In the ninth, Brady Everett led off with an infield single, but was caught stealing on a delayed steal play. Castillo walked, but pinch-runner Ryan Angel was called out at first on a pickoff play that Bees' manager protested to the point of ejection. After that, Jeff Howell was called out on strikes on a pitch that appeared low and outside. Howell expressed his disbelief with the call and was also ejected in the inning.
The Swing brought in Matt Spade for his Midwest League debut. He walked Thompson to start the inning and then walked Pennell on four pitches while he was squared to bunt. Felix Peralta was next and on the second pitch showed bunt, pulled the bat back, and hit a chopper to the left side that ate up the shortstop Oliver Marmol who was moving towards third on the bunt defense for an error that loaded the bases and set up Soto for the game-winner.
NOTES: The Bees finish the season with a 38-34 record, gaining two extra games in the first half to make up for two early-season games snowed out at Cedar Rapids. Everett had a double in the first inning and it was the 42nd of his Bees' career, tying him for fifth on the franchise's career-list.
The Bees finish the season with five more games on the road. Tomorrow night is the first of two against the Cedar Rapids Kernels at Veterans Memorial Stadium. RH Jason Godin (5-5, 3.01) will be on the mound for the Bees against RH Trevor Bell (7-4, 4.24). There will be no radio broadcast available on the Bees' radio network, but fans can find the call of the game from the Kernels side on the internet by visiting the "Multimedia" page on the Bees' website at www.gobees.com.
