Burlington, IA (August 27, 2007) - Juan Beltran had three hits, including a two-run home run in the top of the ninth inning, that gave the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (26-36, 48-82) a 6-4 win over the Burlington Bees (29-33, 59-72) at Community Field tonight. The Rattlers get a split of this four-game series with a win in the last two games, but the Bees won the season series 5-3.
The Bees jumped out to an early lead with three runs in the bottom of the third inning against spot starter Tom Ellis. With one out, Derrick Robinson singled, stole second, stole third, and scored on an infield single by Jeff Bianchi. Brady Everett followed that up with a two-run homer to left for his tenth home run of the year. Everett also had a double in the first inning. It was his team-leading 28th of the season, tying him for fifth in the Midwest League.
Wisconsin responded against Bees' starter Ed Cegarra with two runs in the top of the fourth inning. Kuo Hui Lo led off with a single, stole second, and scored on a double by Ron Garth. Garth moved to third on a fly ball to right and scored on a sacrifice fly by Guy Welsh before Cegarra got out of the inning. The Rattlers would take the lead against Cegarra in the fifth. With one out, Beltran was hit by a pitch, went to third on a base hit by Juan Diaz and when the throw went toward third base, Diaz scooted into second. After striking out Lo for the second out of the inning, Lo doubled to the wall in deep left-center to drive in both runs and give the Rattlers a 4-3 lead.
Rollie Gibson followed Ellis with two scoreless innings in relief for Wisconsin. Joe Kantakevich pitched a scoreless sixth, but the Bees tied the game against him in the seventh. Jase Turner drew a leadoff walk, stole second, went to third on a flyout to right by Jesus Soto, and scored on a sacrifice fly to left by Robinson.
Angelo Morales followed Cegarra to the mound in the sixth, worked three scoreless innings, and went back out for the ninth. He allowed a leadoff walk to Welsh. Reed Eastley advanced Welsh to second with a sacrifice bunt. After striking out Leury Bonilla, Beltran hit the first pitch from Morales to deep left for his first home run since last July and put the Rattlers up 6-4.
Andrew Barb (3-1) had worked a scoreless eighth and went back out to the mound looking for the win. Jeff Howell led off with a single. Turner struck out, but Soto walked to put the tying runs on base. Robinson broke his bat and grounded out to first for the second out, moving the runners to second and third, but Barb was able to strike out Jeff Bianchi to end the game and pick up the win. Morales (4-1) got his first loss of the season and allowed four runs in five innings in two appearances in this series after working eleven consecutive scoreless innings after returning from his rehab stint in Arizona on August 7th.
