Burlington, IA (June 24, 2007) - Ed Cegarra and Josh Cribb combined on a four-hit shutout and Felix Peralta belted a two-run homer to lead the offense as the Burlington Bees (3-1, 33-40) beat the Cedar Rapids Kernels (1-3, 39-34) 6-0 this afternoon at Community Field this afternoon. With the win, the Bees take three of four in this series to open the second half and even the season series 5-5 with the Kernels.

Cegarra (1-0) matched his career-high with six innings pitched and allowed just two hits for his first Midwest League win. Both hits were singles by Mark Trumbo. Trumbo also singled against Cribb in the ninth and had three of the Kernels' four hits in the game. Cribb finished the final three innings and picked up his second save of the year. Scott Knazek added a two-out single in the top of the ninth for the Kernels final knock.

The Bees got on the board early against Kernels' starter Tim Schoeninger (9-3). Kurt Mertins led off the first with a double off the glove of a diving Stantrel Smith in right-center. Joe Dickerson moved Mertins to third with a groundout to first and Jeff Bianchi drove him in with a sacrifice fly to left. The Bees broke the game open against Schoeninger in the fifth. Matt Morizio led off with a single and after a flyout, Peralta blasted his home run off the side of the batters' eye in straight-away center field for a 3-0 lead. Jamar Walton followed with his first base hit of the season and Mertins was hit by a pitch to put two men back on base. Dickerson then lined a single to left-center that drove in Walton. The throw to third wasn't in time to get Mertins and Dickerson moved into second on the backside of the play. That chased Schoeninger from the game and the Kernels brought in Amalio Diaz for his first appearance of the season. Bianchi greeted Diaz with a base hit up the middle that brought in Mertins and finished the rally for a 5-0 Bees' lead.

The Bees added their final run in the sixth. Michael Thompson led off with a double, moved to third on a groundout by Morizio, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Luis Castillo. It was Castillo's first RBI as a Bee. Diaz also worked the seventh and allowed one run over 2.2 innings. Felipe Arrendondo finished the game on the mound for the Kernels with a scoreless eighth.

The Bees will play their next eight games on the road starting with the first of four tomorrow night at Elfstrom Stadium against the Kane County Cougars. LH Everett Teaford (3-6, 4.91) will pitch for the Bees against RH Scott Deal (3-5, 4.52) for the Cougars. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:30 and the game will be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show starting at 6:10.
