Burlington, IA (June 23, 2007) - Matt Morizio tied the game in the bottom of the seventh and won the game in the bottom of the ninth with a pair of singles in the Burlington Bees (2-1, 32-40) 3-2 win over the Cedar Rapids Kernels (1-2, 39-33) in game two of tonight's double-header at Community Field. The win gave the Bees a split of the twin bill after the Kernels pitched a shutout in an 8-0 victory in the opener.
After getting handled easily in game one, things looked bleak for the Bees in game two as well. The Kernels scored an unearned run in the top of the first and were cruising behind starter David Herndon, who carried a no-hitter through 5.2 innings of game two before Jesus Perez singled to break up the bid. Herndon took a shutout into the bottom of the seventh, looking for his third complete game of the season. After getting the first out, Michael Thompson and Joe Dickerson singled to put runners on first and second. Herndon struck out Felix Peralta for the second out of the inning, but couldn't finish the final out as Morizio lined a single to left to drive in Thompson with the tying run. The Bees didn't have a chance to win in the seventh as Dickerson was caught in a rundown between second and third for the final out.
The Kernels went back on top in the top of the ninth. Aaron Hartsock had already worked 2.1 scoreless innings in relief before giving up a leadoff single to Mark Trumbo. After a strikeout, Hartsock fell behind 3-1 on Jon Hodach. With Trumbo running on the pitch, Hodach lined a double to the wall in left and Trumbo rumbled home without a play to put the Kernels up 2-1. Hartsock struck out the next two batters to end the inning. Bobby Cassevah had pitched a scoreless eighth for the Kernels and went back out for the ninth. Kurt Mertins led off with a bouncing ball up the third base line that took a bad hop over the glove of Matt Sweeney and went down the line for a leadoff double. Jeff Bianchi followed with a bunt that not only got Mertins to third, but was placed so well on the third base side that he beat the play at first for a hit to put runners on the corners with nobody out. Cassevah struck out Thompson, but walked Dickerson to load the bases. Peralta lined a single to left to drive in Mertins with the tying run and the Kernels brought in left Blake Holler to face Morizio. Morizio hit the second pitch on the ground through the left side for the game-winner. Cassevah (1-1) got the loss. Hartsock (4-2) picked up the win. Bees' starter Tyler Chambliss retired 15 in a row after Trumbo's RBI double in the first and struck out five in 5.2 innings.
In game one, the Kernels got to Bees' starter Harold Mozingo (6-6) for five runs on seven hits in 3.2 innings, including four in the fourth that knocked him out of the game. The loss ended Mozingo's streak of four straight winning decisions. Henry Barrera allowed three runs on four hits in 2.1 innings. To save the bullpen, the Bees brought in Thompson to pitch the seventh and he retired the Kernels in order while striking out one. Wil Ortiz went 3-4 with a double and drove in three. Ryan Mount had two hits and scored two runs. Josh Davies also drove in a pair. Kernels' starter Jeremy Haynes came out after three innings and the Kernels used four pitchers in the shutout. Barrett Browning (4-2) pitched two innings for the win. Warner Madrigal and Felipe Arrendondo each tossed an inning. The Bees were limited to five hits and Thompson had two of them.
