On Thursday, he'll receive a new form of recognition, courtesy of his hometown Lowell Spinners, Class A Affiliate of the Boston Red Sox. The first 1,500 fans at LeLacheur Park on Thursday, June 21 will receive a James Whistler bobblehead doll, sponsored by Trinity EMS and Cable Design and in participation with the Whistler House in Lowell. The doll features Whistler as he saw himself in his own self-portrait. An actress portraying the famous Whistler's mother is scheduled to attend the game, watching, as depicted, from a rocking chair. When the Spinners featured Lowell-native and author Jack Kerouac as a bobblehead doll in 2003, it quickly became the most popular giveaway in Spinners history and was accepted into Cooperstown's National Baseball Hall of Fame Museum in 2005. "The Lowell Spinners are proud to honor another local legend in James Whistler," said Lowell Spinners Vice President and General Manager, Tim Bawmann. "It has to be one of the most original pieces on any Minor League giveaway schedule." In addition to James Whistler, the Spinners are also featuring the following bobblehead giveaways (sponsors) to the first 1,500 fans: Orchestra Conductor from an area Boston symphony on July 3 (Getronics), Anibal Sanchez No-Hitter on July 16 (Trinity EMS and Cable Design), WROR's Loren and Wally on July 22 (Sovereign Bank), Mike Lowell Spinners on July 30 (Outback Steakhous and RESCOM Windows), and Johnny Pesky on August 23 (Tyco Electronics and Collins Dentistry). |
