SYRACUSE (NY) - The Syracuse Chiefs announced today that the Toronto Blue Jays have assigned catcher Gregg Zaun to Syracuse on a rehabilitation assignment, assigned catcher John Schneider to Syracuse from New Hampshire (AA-Eastern League), and purchased the contract of catcher Curtis Thigpen.

Zaun, 36, was hitting .186 with one home run and eight runs batted in for Toronto when he injured his thumb and was placed on the disabled list on April 25.

Zaun was originally drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in the 17th round in the 1989 draft. He made a brief stop in Syracuse after being signed by the Blue Jays as a free agent in 2004. He has appeared in 938 Major League games for Baltimore, Florida, Texas, Kansas City, Houston, Colorado and Toronto.

Schneider, 27, was originally drafted by the Blue Jays in the 13th round of the 2002 draft out of the University of Delaware. He batted .187 with 3 HR and 13 RBI in 30 games for the New Hampshire Fisher Cats this season. Schneider spent parts of the 2003, 2005, and 2006 seasons with the Chiefs.

Thigpen, 24, was originally drafted by the Blue Jays in the second round of the 2004 draft out of the University of Texas. He was hitting .299 with three home runs and 16 RBI in 44 games for the Chiefs this year. This is Thigpen's first promotion to the Major Leagues.
