Devil Rays hurlers dominate twinbill

The Princeton Devil Rays used dominating pitching to sweep a doubleheader from the Bristol Sox at DeVault Memorial Stadium on Thursday.

In the opener, Matt Moore and Michael Jarman combined on a one-hitter as Princeton notched a 2-1 victory.

Jason McEachern and Juan Santana three-hit the Sox en route to a 3-0 blanking in the nightcap for the Devil Rays, who rebounded quickly after dropping the first two contests of the five-game series. A 19-year-old left-hander from Walton Beach, Fla., Moore (2-2) allowed a run on one hit -- Juan Silverio's bunt single in the fifth inning -- and two walks with six strikeouts over five frames to lower his ERA to 2.23.

"It came down the first-base line," Moore said of Bristol's lone hit. "I fielded it and tagged [Silverio] out, but the ump said I didn't."

Moore, an eighth-round selection by Tampa Bay in the 2007 First-Year Player Draft, watched as Jarman followed with two scoreless frames, striking out three and walking one to notch his fourth save.

The Devil Rays (20-31) got all the offense they'd need in the first inning of the opener as Elias Otero and Eli Sonoqui ripped back-to-back RBI singles.

Steven Upchurch (1-1) took the loss in the first game after yielding two runs on five hits and a walk with two strikeouts over six innings.

McEachern (3-0) allowed a hit and struck out three over five innings. Santana yielded two hits and a walk while fanning two over the final two frames for his first save.

"Jason McEachern threw really well," Moore said. "He's got a great fastball and a great curve."

Once again, the Devil Rays scored all their runs in one inning as D.J. Jones delivered an RBI groundout before Dustin Biell and Brian Bryles stroked run-scoring singles in the third.

Sox starter Joucer Martinez (3-3) surrendered three runs on six hits and a walk with four strikeouts over six innings.

Andrew Garcia and Kenneth Gilbert doubled in the nightcap for Bristol (27-25).
