Gomez, Sultanes on brink of finals

Heber Gomez drove in four runs Wednesday as the Sultanes de Monterrey topped the Saraperos de Saltillo, 12-6, in Game 4 of their Mexican League semifinal series.

Gomez lined an RBI single in the fourth inning and a two-run double in the seventh before delivering an RBI single that sparked a five-run ninth.

Carlos Orrantia smacked an RBI triple in the ninth and Benji Gil followed with a three-run homer for the Sultanes, who took a 3-1 lead in the best-of-7 series.

Reliever Dario Veras (1-0) retired three batters and allowed three hits between the sixth and seventh innings for the win. Monterrey tarter Felix Heredia gave up four runs on seven hits with a walk while striking out three over 4 2/3 frames.

Jonathan Aceves slugged a three-run homer in the fifth and Noe Munoz went 3-for-4 for the Saraperos.

Reliever Fernando Salas (0-1) took the loss after surrendering two runs on two hits and a walk while fanning two in the seventh. Saltillo starter Juan Manuel Palafox gave up four runs on six hits and two walks with one strikeout in 3 1/3 innings.
