Delmarva's Bascom perfect in pro debut

You can't get better than perfect, and that's what Delmarva starter Timothy Bascom was in his pro debut.

The 22-year-old right-hander fanned nine over five flawless frames as the Shorebirds rallied in the ninth inning to beat host Lakewood, 3-2, on Monday.

Bascom, a standout at the University of Central Florida and Baltimore's fourth-round pick in the 2007 draft, retired all 15 hitters he faced -- and five of the last six on strikeouts -- before being lifted with a 2-0 lead.

"I couldn't be happier to get out on the mound and get playing," said Bascom, who threw 52 pitches but did not factor in the decision. "I was able to get in the groove and get ahead in the count. That set everything else up, so accuracy was the main thing that helped me out.

"I was just trying to go pitch by pitch," he added. "I thought I might be able to do pretty well, but I never thought that what did happen might happen."

After the BlueClaws (4-1) tied the game, 2-2, on Quinton Berry's RBI single in the eighth, the Shorebirds (2-3) rallied in the ninth.

Pedro Florimon Jr. smacked a one-out single, stole second, reached third on a throwing error by shortstop Fidel Hernandez and scored on Brandon Tripp's single to right.

Delmarva reliever Wilfredo Perez (2-2) got the win after allowing two runs on four hits while fanning two and walking one over three innings. Chad Thall tossed a perfect ninth for his 10th save.

Lakewood reliever Garet Hill (3-2) surrendered one unearned run on two hits while fanning three in two innings to take the loss.
