Spinners name official mascot 04/09/2008 8:44 PM ETLowell Spinners
LOWELL, Mass. - The Lowell Spinners, Class-A Affiliate of the World Series Champion Boston Red Sox, are very excited to announce that the Red-Tailed Hawk has been named the official mascot of the team's Yankees Elimination Promotion. "The Red-Tailed Hawk has created quite a name for itself with its recent sightings at Fenway Park," said Lowell Spinners Vice President/General Manager Tim Bawmann. "The fans have accepted the Hawk as part of Red Sox Nation, evident by the standing ovation it received at the Red Sox opening day home opener." The Spinners have lined up a Red-Tailed Hawk for fans to see in-person at the August 4 game through Jonathan Wood and his Raptor Project. Seats are still available and can be purchased through the Lowell Spinners ticket office. "We are excited that fans will get an opportunity to see a Red Tailed Hawk in-person," said Bawmann. "I would not recommend Yankee fans wear Yankees apparel that night." Over 75 teams in 50 different communities have participated in the Yankees Elimination Promotion since 2006 agreeing to eliminate the Yankees team name and change to the Spinners team name. Also, a result of the Yankee Elimination Promotion, the Spinners along with Good Sports have teamed up to give $20,000 in Equipment Grants to local youth leagues in need. In 2006, the Acre Youth Organization received a $10,000 Equipment Grant and in 2007 the Lawrence Central Little League was the recipient of the $10,000 Equipment Grant. Currently the Spinners and Good Sports are accepting applications for next year's $10,000 Equipment Grant recipient.
