Holcomb, Bumgarner top SAL All-Star Team 08/26/2008 6:23 PM ETBy Danny Wild / Special to MLB.com
NEW YORK -- Darin Holcomb may not lead the league in a lot of categories, but he's earned the respect and admiration of just about everyone. Holcomb was named the South Atlantic League's Most Valuable Player on Tuesday to highlight the 2008 Postseason All-Star Team, which was announced Tuesday by league president Eric Krupa. Managers, general managers, sportswriters and radio broadcasters voted Holcomb the league's best after he hit .314 with 153 hits, 13 home runs and 93 RBIs in 131 games for the Asheville Tourists. The third baseman ranks third in RBIs, fifth in average and ninth in homers and garnered enough of the 64 votes to take the MVP. Augusta's Madison Bumgarner was named the league's Most Outstanding Pitcher after he went 14-3 with a league-leading 1.45 ERA and a league-high 155 strikeouts for the GreenJackets. Rome's Jason Heyward was chosen as the Most Outstanding Major League Prospect after batting .323 with 145 hits, 11 homers and 52 RBIs in 120 games for the Braves. Catcher Jesus Montero (Charleston RiverDogs), first baseman Frederick Freeman (Rome), second baseman Everth Cabrera (Asheville), shortstop Freddy Galvis (Lakewood BlueClaws), third baseman Holcomb and utility infielder Steffan Wilson (West Virginia Power) rounded out the team's infield. Wilson leads the league with 97 RBIs and Freeman ranks second with 94. Cabrera leads the Minors with 71 stolen bases a year after swiping 61. Montero is tops in the circuit with 158 hits. Heyward, Michael Stanton (Greensboro Grasshoppers), Michael Mitchell (Asheville) and Caleb Gindl (West Virginia) were named the league's top outfielders, while Eric Fryer (West Virginia) was selected as the squad's designated hitter. Stanton leads the league with 35 homers and, as of Tuesday, is four short of the most in the Minors. Asheville's Joe Mikulik was selected as the All-Star manager and Augusta's Ross Grimsley was added as a coach for the second straight season. Mikulik lead the Tourists to a first-half Southern Division title and is 35-28 in the second half. Grimsley has helped Augusta to the best second-half record in the league (42-21) as of Aug. 26.
