Name the Team Contest
10/08/2008 9:47 AM ET
The franchise is official ... the team has a coach, a league and a state-of-the-art facility. Even the team's "first name" is in place: West Texas United.

All that remains ... is a nickname.

To "fill in the blank," and help give the Permian Basin's new soccer club its own, unique, identity ... a name-the-team contest is underway.

The nickname will follow the words "West Texas United ..."

Entries may be submitted by using a form available in the Midland Reporter-Telegram, by direct mail or e-mail (see addresses, below).

Information on the new soccer club is also available via a link on the RockHounds web site (www.midlandrockhounds.org).

When submitting an entry, please include your choice for team name and a quick sentence or two on how your name "connects" soccer and West Texas.

The person submitting the winning entry will receive a prize package including four (4) season tickets to the team's inaugural season ... official team merchandise ... and have his-or-her photo in the newspaper along with the announcement of the team name. In the event of multiple winning entries, the grand prize winner will be determined through a random drawing of those submitting the winning name.

The deadline for entries is this Saturday (October 11). At that time, the list of entries ... currently at more than 100 ... will be paired down to a "top 10" list of finalists from which the team's nickname will be selected.

► About "West Texas United"
The "primary" name for the new soccer team is derived from the largest youth club soccer organization in the Permian Basin: West Texas United Soccer Club.

Utilizing the name for the new PDL team was a joint decision. The PDL team is not "taking over" the youth programs. Instead, the two will work jointly to create and advance the best possible atmosphere for the sport of soccer in the Permian Basin.

Many teams in the United Soccer Leagues (see right) have a developed a system of youth teams as part of their soccer "umbrella," which is what the West Texas United Soccer Club partnership is all about.

From the PDL club's standpoint, the "West Texas United" name is well established in the Permian Basin, providing a local "flavor," and the local soccer community is a natural foundation for the club's fan base.

For the youth teams, the partnership will provide more structure, a better overall soccer format ... and will help give youth soccer more visibility and a "brand name."
